Take a Look Back
In the first Iron Man you could clearly see that Robert was starting to become the new Tyler Durden from Fight Club. He was already becoming lean from having to get ready for his role as Tony Starks. However, if you take a look at him in Sherlock Holmes one will notice how much toner and leaner in looked in comparasion. This due to the faact that Robert simply kept working out and maintaining his body from Iron Man one.
Time Actually Helps
The time it took Robert to film these three movies actually helped his body get used to new size. The fact is the for both Iron Man I and Sherlock Holmes he lost weight in order to get the lean look. Cutting calories and working out for that past two years helped him look even better in Iron Man 2. In fact one of the secrets to him looking so sharp is that he was already lean and actually turned around an gained 20 more pounds of muscle.

Gaining Muscles Makes You Look Shredded!
Thats right when you have maintained a lower percentage of body fat and then you gain muscle you actually will look more shredded than ever. My friend Rusty has a decent video explaining about how it takes your skin a little while to shrink down to your lower body size. Visit Visual Impact and it is the third video down (actually if you have time you should watch all three)”.
The Workout Routine
Indian Clubs
Downey used bowling ball like pins that weight five- and 10-pounds and would swing them around at [high] speeds and do unusual movements. This worked the shoulder and arm development, and actually pretty good on the joints, because it’s rotational movement.
Wheelbarrows
A wheelbarrow was especailly made to welded it to hold up to 650 pounds. They made an obstacle course with cones and had Robert wield it in figure eight formations through the cones. This targeted the chest, shoulders, and back.
Fire Hoses
Fire hoses were filled with sand and water – one of each – and Robert have to whip them around and would do almost squats while whipping the fire hoses up and down.
Sled
A sprinter’s sled with weights was tied it to the end of a heavy, 50-foot rope. Robert would stand stationary and then pull it to him, drop it, then sprint 50 feet away again.
Truck Tires and Sledgehammer
Downey had beat giant truck tires with sledgehammer like you’d beat a drum.
SUV Tires
Downey flipped and threw SUV tires like a discus.
Downey also used kettlebells and a War Machine, which is a portable, patented pulley training system that uses body weight as resistance.
